We owned
THIS 1983 Toyota chassis motor home, bought new in 1983 and sold it in 2007, 24 years later.
I too support the axle trouble. It was not the quantity of lugs that was the safety matter, but rather that the outer wheel bolted to the inner wheel, and the inner wheel to the axle-hub. The cantelever stress was too much. The 5 versus 6 lugs is described only to help people identify the bad design.
That poor design was common across all mini-pickup trucks of the era. Our rig was offered on a Toyota, Ford, and Datsun, all with the same rear wheel flaw. That design was not offered by the chassis manufacture, but rather as an add-on accessory from the company that made the motor home.
We bought our 1983 Toyota/Mirgae with the bad rear wheel design. We actually paid extra for that as an upgrading option to single rear wheels. Little did anyone know back then that it would be trouble.
In 1988 (or maybe 1987) Toyota introduced true duel wheels. Sometime thereafter Toyota had a partial recall on earlier models where they would ship a free true-duel rear axle to a shop of my choice. We had to sign documents that we wouldn't sue them. Our local shop charged us $800 to install the axle on our motor home. Adding new tires and other upgrades, the project totalled $3000. In my link above, near the bottom of the page, you will see a picture of what parts were involved and shipped for free.
Any Toyota chassis prior to 1988 (maybe 1987) originally came with single rear wheels from Toyota, most converted to that bad wheel design by RV manufactures. If you see an earlier Toyota like our 1983 chassis pictured in that link, the partial recall was done to it.
Not just safe for tires not falling off, but the new axle also included bigger brakes. It made a huge difference in the way our rig handled and braked. The rig went from dangerous to safe. I would "NEVER" purchase any micro-mini motor home with the bad wheel design.
Yes those mini pickup truck motor home designs were called micro-mini's.
