We bought a 1987 Toyota Dolphin new in late '87 and the replacement of the mattress was the first of a string of DIY mods I did over the years. I trashed the so called foam sectional mattress pads and installed and screwed down a piece of 3/4 inch plywood the size of a regular size mattress and using galvanized shelf brackets, mounted a 6 inch wide section of stained oak to the exposed edge. Purchased, for what at the time was a top of the line 8 inch mattress from Sears.
As we had to live in the Dolphin while stationed in Phoenix, I added the partition below the bed with a hinged door to help insulate and conserve heat and A/C.
I also replaced the front bubble plastic front window with tempered flat pane glass and kept the insulation on it as well.
