1991 Rockwood Fuel Pump Issues

Problem began with generator, which I assume is related to later fuel issues. When I started the generator, it would cut out within a couple minutes. No problem restarting it, it just wouldn't stay on.

A couple months later, all of a suddern the engine began stalling and cutting out, like I was out of gas (guage showed 1/2 tank). We were on our way back from Glamis Sand Dunes to San Diego and I stopped in El Centro to fill it up. When I removed the gas cap, there was pressure, I did a visual check and was unable to make a diagnosis. Miraculously we made the 100+ mountainous ride home, despite the constant spitting and stalling the entire trip.

Once parked, it wouldn't start at all. I replaced the fuel filter, that didn't work. After considerable research on the Internet (this forum was a wonderful resource - THANK YOU!), I realized the Ford 460 engine came with an in tank fuel pump. Had to buy from local Ford dealership for $600+. I installed it and still having same problems.

It takes a few tries to start and only runs a few minutes before stalling. I did more on-line research and wonder if it's the "relay" I keep seeing mentioned but am unable to find on my RV.

HELP!

  • May be a plugged line where it suctions from the tank or at the filter. Some lines have screens in them and can get debri built up in them. Take an airhose and blow back thru from the engine end.
