George you might try to find a shop that specializes in electrical automotive work. As you've found out the labor cost will eat you alive. That's why I do my own repairs. Some take longer than others because I'm half mule and to stubborn to give up. Thank God for the information I find on the internet.
Gale the GM distributors that I've worked with had a roll pin through the gear. I had one that the wire was making contact most of the time. This was many years ago. I remember drilling out the plastic plug and splicing in new wire, not what I would recommend for a fix. I was also told back in the 70's that a elec fuel pump was either worked or it didn't, not true either.
