1995 Chevrolet 454 TBI engine starting problem

I have a 1995 Class A Airbus with P30 chassis and 454 TBI engine with starting problems. I have had 3 mechanics work on it, they all said it was an ignition problem. They replaced the coil, distributor cap & rotor, and other electrical items I was not familiar with. Each time they eventually got engine started. In each case a few hours, or few days after they left I had the same problem, engine cranked but would not start, or even try to start. Any help would be appreciated.
  • Not sure what level of training the mechanics had but they sound like parts changers!
Yours is a straightforward system that is easy to diagnose, fuel or spark or both.
Since they "repaired' the ignition system it would seem that the problem is fuel.
Fuel as stated, relay and/or pressure switch.
Also could be fuel pump (in tank), pump wiring, fuel filter.
  • Sounds like you are trying to fix the symptoms and not the problem.

Whoever they are will have to narrow it down to fuel or electrical before throwing any more parts at the problem.
  • Welcome to RV.net!
It could be the fuel pump relay. It supplies power to the fuel pump when the igntion is first turned on for 2-5 seconds.
Next item is the oil pressure gauge sending unit. There must be oil pressure prior to the fuel pump operating under normal conditions.
