1996 Southwind Storm 30H

I'm looking at a 1996 Southwind Storm 30H Class A motorhome to purchase. I took it for a test drive and noticed the brakes were hard. Had to really step down on them. A little later I lost a fan belt and then no power steering and NO BRAKES. This motorhome has 43,500 miles on it and looks like it's been well maintained. Carfax says it's clean. Has anyone had brake problems with this model? Thanks.

  • Rig has a hydro boost working off power steering pump.
Could be bad hydo boost unit or power steering pump.
  • Check the power steering fluid color. When new it is close to clear and when it gets dark it dose not work as well.

Flushing the power steering fluid to improve the power steering and the hydroboost / brakes.

It's not hard to flush them with 2 people and cheep to do.

Others and I can explain how to do it and I have seen it written in the past on the site.
  • Jim gave good info that should help you in your web searches on the MH.

If it is based a Chevy P30 chassis then this all sounds normal if the power steering belt broke. Belts and all rubber under the doghouse needs to be replaced anyway before you strike out across the country.

At least you got to drive it and knows the transmission, dash air, etc works.

Typically you can expect to spend another $5K on that era of MH over the next few years to make it road ready. Some of us did not know that at buy-in time but at least you will be prepared to spend that amount.
  • Most gassers have hydroboost and run the brake booster off the power steering pump. I'd guess that rig has a bad power steering pump that caused the hard brakes and then broke the belt. or perhaps the other way 'round?
    Replace the belt and see?
  • Need to know what chassis the rig is on?
It could be an issue with collapsed rubber brake lines.
