no, I did not tap it with the key in the start position, I cant hold the key in that position and tap on the relay at the same time ( not that limber it seems...
I have some very heavy gauge wire somewhere from my sons old stereo setup when he was into having the superloud noise aka music coming from his car LOL But, WHAT does the starter even look like and when you say "If you hold one stripped end to the post where on the photo has the rubber cap to the bare large post the starter should engage" I do this with the key in the "on" position, correct?
