theoretically, the torque converter could be balooning and causing this issue. however, im told that this issue would be persistant in all gears if that were the case?

Im not too familiar with tranny design/repair. My handyman skills pretty much terminate after the engine, and even then, I wouldnt rebuild my own lol.
