May have an alternator problem, were is it located is near the engine? If it is bad and has to be replaced, how much do they run. Has anyone changed the alternator themselves or it has to go to a shop...

I should add, the highway patrol came to our aid at 2:am as we attempting to get home. When I separated the motor home from the car I disconnected the Blue Ox breaking system and put in the trunk of the car. The patrolman asked what was that? I explained that it is stop the car in case of emergency. This was in California, but they were very nice and helpful
