2 x 12 volts or 2 x 6 volts batteries?

Hi, I am about to replace my house batteries. I was reading that connecting 2 x 6 volts in series will double the voltage but not the amps. Connecting 2 x 12 volts in parallel will give 12 volts but double the amps.

For the same price, what is the best solution? I plan on buying the standard acid type batteries at Costco or Sam club.

  • The GC2 six volt (golf cart type) battery is pretty much industry standard in the motorhome industry. GC2 6 volt batteries are more ruggedly constructed, take physical abuse better, and handle excessive discharge better than the 12V battery you are looking at. Most 12V batteries are made for dual purpose and are not truly the deep discharge type that the GC2 6V battery is designed to be. You should get longer life and greater capacity in the long run with a pair of 6 volt batteries.
  • Get true "deep discharge" batteries, not "dual purpose". At Sam's or Costco, that means golf cart batteries, 6V.
  • I prefer 2 12 volters myself. then if one battery goes South, you still are powered. don't want to be out in boondocks utah and have to find a good reasonably priced 6 volter to get going again.

  • There are links in this forum about the differences between these. The amp hours on a pair of good 6v golf cart batteries is better than the 12 v. Amps are one thing, amp hours are another.
