2000 Coachmen Santara 37RBS Diesel

I am looking at a 2000 Coachmen Santara 37RBS Diesel with 129k miles on it. What problems should I look for? It has a Cummins 275, Allison 6 speed and 7kw Gen. I have looked at the price on Nada, what price should I really pay of it?

Thanks

Buster

  • 37 foot diesel powered RV is a good starter? I believe it is a bit to much for starters. I would like to keep it under 30 foot. Many Parks keep size under 30 feet. Opening up a lot more places to visit. I want to thank all the people who offered advice. I looked up the guy who was placed the craigslist add, he is a RV salesman.

    Thanks

  • glamousorbust is correct about that Cummins engine. We had two failures when brand new blowing a hole on the side of the block. I believe I read that those engines were manufactured in Mexico and they had lots of problems with them. Like he said the number 53 is stamped on the side of the block.

But those engines on pickups did have plenty of power. The two I am referring to were on Dodge pickups.
  • I owned a Santara with the 5.9. Best m.p.g. for me was 11. With the mileage I would pull a sample of all fluids and have them checked for engine wear.

Mine was a good entry level coach.
  • The guy selling it has posted it get 14 mpg on a trip form Fresno, CA to LA and back. Is this the fuel mileage I should see or is he over stating to mileage?
  • Probably around the $30k range would be a good deal. I just bought a 1999 holiday rambler endeavor a few months ago. Mine also has the 275 5.9 cummins, allison 6 speed. I love it. The engine blocks are prone to cracking on these though. Google "53 block" and you'll see what I mean. Doesn't happen to all of them. The bosch VP44 fuel pump is the least desirable and is prone to failure. If it does fail, it's about $4k to replace it, with the part alone costing over $2300 from cummins(checked recently). Regardless, I got a great deal on mine and the power is adequate. It pushes this coach down the road and up hills with absolutely no trouble.
