My 2001 F-53 NationalRV Dolphin: the engine alternator charges my 12V 'starter" battery AND the 2 6V coach batteries.
When on shore power, only the 2 6V coach batteries get charged.
I have used a "trick-le start" gadget with mixed results. That simple setup cannibalizes the 2 6v batteries to keep the 12V battery "up". Good for multi-month snowbird parking. However...when the 2 6v "die" (like in long term storage) all of them "die". Then it's time for the jumper cables and hope all 3 batteries come back.
