That siphoning happened to me at a campground as well (before the above modification.) I "overfilled" my tank and water started coming out of the vent/overflow and it kept going and going and going until it was just about empty.
I am not sure how it can do this but now I fill very slowly and never all the way to the top.
Weird stuff.
