2011 Jayco Greyhawk 31fs Bunkhouse Opinions

We currently own a 2008 Chateau Sport that we bought in 2009. We are a family of 6 and have done many long trips in this popout free RV with minimum problems. It's a little snug but we have always made it work. It's has a chevy workhorse chassis. We are considering trading it in for a 2011 Greyhawk bunkhouse. It has two popouts and it sits on a ford chassis. We would to hear what people have to say about this unit. I think our main issue is going from something we know and it's problems to something that may have more problems. Thanks so much!
  • We have a 2009 Greyhawk 31FS that we bought new. There isn't much of a difference between the 2009s and the 2011s. We have 2 kids. They were 8 and 6 when we bought the motorhome and they were excited about having their own bunks then.

Five years later, neither of them use the bunks. They both complain they are too small. The complaint is they are too narrow. The bunks are 10 inches narrower than a standard twin mattress. I've slept on the lower bunk once and did not have a good night sleep. Both of our kids are normal average size for their age (13 & 11).

As for the motorhome itself, we are happy with it. We've had a few issues, but nothing serious or too much to handle on my own except a shower drain that popped up from the tub while we were camping. I didn't have the tools to fix it on the road.

This is our first motorhome and I am very happy with how it handles on the road. It handles a lot better than a lot of the horror stories I read about on this forum and we've done nothing to it other than make sure tires are properly inflated.

With two slides it is heavy and does not get good gas mileage. At best, with both AC units on (dash and house rooftop unit), it gets 8 mph. Driving through the small "mountains" of GA and SC, it gets 6.5 mph.

After owning a motorhome with 2 slideouts, I could not imagine not having them. The extra 18 inches in width they provide makes a huge difference in livability. We have done trips as long as 6 weeks in the same campground and were happy with the space we had. One thing the motorhome does lack is ample storage. For 1 week or less trips, this isn't much of a problem. However on 1 month and longer trips, it would be nice to have more outside storage. Since the kids do not use the bunks, they are used for storage.

Any time you buy something used, you take the risk of getting a piece of junk. Being only 1 year out of warranty, one would hope it wouldn't be in too bad of shape.

  • Thanks Michael! Never thought of the bunks being too small. My oldest 14 now sleeps on the dinette and complains about it being too short. The outside storage is a huge concern for us but there is more inside storage so that's a plus. Gas mileage I had heard was not good so that is also a concern. In the end I'm worried about going from a unit that we know to one we do not know. Is ours perfect no but we know what's wrong with it. This one could have issues that they are "hiding" from us that may be worse than what we have. Very hard decision for us.
