It does take more than say a cruise control cancel tap. The computer needs to see a reduction in speed before it will down shift. If you want to test it without finding a hill you will feel the more aggressive down shifting around town braking for stop lights and such if the feature is active.
Worked great for me this past summer on I40 East in western North Carolina. A bit of braking at the top, transmission down sifted and the coach held steady at 50 MPH coasting the rest of the way down the mountain.
