Yes!! I found exactly this camping this summer. Our van AC could barely keep up while driving. I noticed when we pulled into deep shade the AC would work much better. We even checked and the coolant was "full" so it wasnt leaking or anything. When we stopped the heat of the engine would overwhelm the overhead compartment AC. I too opened the hood to let the engine cool down. I also would put up a barrier between the seats and the compartment to keep the heat out. I am going to devise a better "curtain" between the driving area and the back.
