50 amp service

It sure seems to me that there is either a very high resistance connection somewhere. I'd start by inspecting the blades on the plug end of the cable, if they are not bright brass colored, burnish them with an ignition point file or your wife's emery board. Don't use steel wool as I have heard some experts suggest. The shards will conduct and while not likely, can cause a shock problem. Then with the cable disconnected from the system check the cable.

If the cable is bad, replace. You could try removing the molded plug is the cable shows bad and test directly to the wires. That would require a new plug but they are cheap.

From there on check every connection all the way up to the distribution panel circuit breakers.

Of course you could tighten everything first and the turn the power on and see what happens. You wouldn't find the problem if it is a loose connections but you'll have piece of mind that all the connections are secure.

The pastor at the church I attend purchased an older TT and had a professional electrician wire the 30 AMP RV receptacle. You guessed it - he wired it for 240 Volts. Pastor plugged in and blew the new TV, new microwave, and the new rooftop AC would not work.

He then called an amateur RV electrician (me)to show/tell him what went wrong and correct the problem.

I pulled out the dual pole breaker and replaced with a single pole 30 AMP breaker and rewired the outlet. Tested all the outlets, etc. and all were good. A/C still would not work. I pulled the cover off the junction box, and the RV shop that did the A/C install did not connect the wires in the junction box. Saved the A/C.

Pastor replaced the TV and Microwave and used the TT for 8 years. I purchased the TT from him and restored the interior and donated the TT to a church camp in Missouri. The director of the church camp's Grandfather was the original owner of the 1985 TT. The A/C still works today!

I wired 50 AMP and 30 AMP RV outlets at the church camp where the new TT has a home.

As I keep saying.. THey do not mess up 50 amp 4-wire outlets.

They mess up 30 amp 3-wire outlets

The reasons why they do not mess up 50 amps with 4 leads is that they are the same no matter what use the are for. So Home or RV, Air conditioner, Dryer, Welder, Air Comprssor, Grinder, RV Kitchen Stove.. ALL THE SAME.

30 amp, 3 lead: RV and rest of above list.. DIFFERENT.

I would rather not tell you how they screw it up in detail but basically they look at it and think "Electric Dryer" or Air Compressor" or "Welder" instead of RV.. all those are different.

The result is very very expensive.

But with 50 amp outlets.. It does not matter, thus if they think as above.. They wire it right.. So no damage is done.

On one side of my house there was already some #10awg wire with a 30amp breaker on and old outlet that I no longer needed, so took the lazy way out and just installed a 50amp range outlet for the RV and since I have connected a 50amp plug on my 30amp service cord, I don't even have to use an adapter cord. As I've said previously, the 50amp plugs hold up like forever in the campgrounds vs the burning and failure that goes on with 30amp plugs. On the other side of the house, I installed new, but since I only had 3 conductor wire on hand, I installed a 30amp outlet instead and just use a converter for it. I'm not buying when I don't have to and like you said, it's not like I'm living out there full time.

Putting in a 50amp 240v outlet is easy peasy as is a 30amp 120v as is a 20amp 120v. Lotsa war stories shouldnt scare most from a simple project. Now the price of the wire is what scares me.

I find fault with those cheap 50A plugs where you attach the wire to the lugs while they're in the plug (housing). Spend the bucks for the type where the blades actually come out of the housing and keep trouble to a minimum. Remember, you aren't wiring an interior connector for the stove, you're making up an exterior connection.

Always appreciate reading about this topic.If it was not correctly installed then he found out the first time it was activated. Yes, it is easy when you know what your are doing!!!
