50 amp/30 amp

Thought I'd post this up while I had the laptop out. As stated elsewhere, my wife took our Holiday Rambler out this weekend without me. When this is the case, she always does the things I tell her not to as she asks me.

This case concerns amperage. I know if we run both ACs we need to be hooked up to a 50 amp service. She was only hooked to 30 amp and ran both anyway. She said everything ran fine like that (telling me only to throw up in my face that I was wrong). I told her that either the coach could sense it was only hooked to 30 amps and never turned on both compressors (I really don't think my coach is that smart!) or she got really lucky and they never kicked on together, or even worse she might have done some damage to the compressor motors. There wasn't much more 120v pull anywhere in the coach.

Who's right?
  • You are right, but do not tell her that. I cannot get my wife to understand that if the house is 80 degrees and she wants it at 75 degrees, putting the Tstat at 70 degrees is NOT going to cool the house quicker. I just go behind her after she sets it and reset it to 75 degrees. Doug
  • My first thought was that its wise to stay out of arguments between spouses :B

When you mention that you don't think your coach is smart enough to know not to run both AC compressors at the same time......some coaches ARE smart enough to do that thru some type of load-shedding technology. I am only familiar with Winnebago's version so I can't say if you have it or not....but it is possible.

Or, as you say, maybe she just got lucky...
  • I was told that the AC will run,, but eventually you will have a meltdown on your cord, plug or worse (?) Check your plug and/or adapter for cracking or any other sign of excessive heat.
Here is how I learned about this ; I plugged in my coach (110v) to cool the fridge and get ready for the weekend. When I went to check on it 3 hrs later, my AC was running (left the thermo switch on). Luckily I didn't have any meltdowns
  • If you have an SMART EMS by Intellitec, then it should be able to have both AC's turned on because it will sense the 30 amp only shore power and manage the electrical usage accordingly. I don't know if 99 Vacationers had that feature or not.
  • Hi,

With the information provided, unless voltage was being monitored there is no correct answer possible.
  • I'd side with her.. not that she's "right" about doing that, but that it is possible.
