5500 marquis diesel generator not started for years

I know a person for various reasons has not used this MH since 2009. It was brand new. It's a 2009 fred diesel. It has 4700 miles on it and used one winter back in 2009. The oil's been changed I think twice. The MH has not been used and has been stored under a soft top canvas storage building. It's had antifreeze in it for the same length of time as it's in Canada. The transmission oil/filters has never been changed. Now, the big question, to my knowledge the generator has never been started or ran.

I think he can expect lots of problems when he starts to use it?

  • I know that Cummings/Onan tells you to run every month. There are 2 reasons for this.

    1. To keep the fuel fresh in the injection system
    2. To keep moisture/condensation out of the generator.

Condensation can collect inside the generator and corrosion could be a problem. I would suggest that on an expensive piece of equipment like that to take it to a service center and give it a service before starting it. Tell them that it hasn't been started. It may prevent serious damage.
  • My GAS Bounder had 10,000 miles on it and genny had 6 hour (Onan5500) Had sat up for 18 months in Fl. I got it in Richmond.Va. Before I took ownership dealer changed oil/filt on engin and g 2015enny That was 3 years 19 of Dec. Be one happy camper. Now has 42,000

I recently started two Diesel engines that had not been started in years. One, a 671 started in two turns and the other in 3-4 turns. I would worry about the tires.
  • I had a diesel vehicle that would set for 6-7 months in winter year after year

Always started right up every year.
  • Doubt he will have much problem with it if there is no water in the fuel. I have seen diesel machines operate just fine after sitting several years. Doesn't hurt a motor to sit idle if you keep the moisture out.
