Great post, I'm tired just reading it :)
We have crossed from coast to coast every year since 2002. Have kids and grandkids on both coasts. Our first trip we did it in 42 days! Oy. Didn't know what we were doing, but really loved it. As we got older and fully retired those trips began to take more and more time until they got to 6 months. They became less trips than a lifestyle of being on the road.
In recent years our quickest crossing was 9 days, Los Angeles to Providence RI. I had allowed 12 days, just in case. We stopped to visit friends a couple of times and even stayed over two days in Kansas City KS. I doubt we will make another "quick" trip. We are not "religious" about 4 hours/250 miles/stop for 2 days, but we do try. WalMart and other free overnight parking places are our preferred mode when running.
