85 octane
While traveling out west this summer I noticed most of the gas stations offering 85 octane and 87 octane as their mid grade. Has anyone tried this in their gasser? I wasn't going to try it especially ...

Not it doesn't.......and no it doesn't.
There is NO octane detector onboard and no ethanol detector either.
ALL that gets adjusted is the max. timing advance and that only happens in response to an event detected by the knock/ping detector.
And what's more.....if you have a knock because the fuel is detonating BEFORE the spark hits (compression knock), then adjusting the spark timing will do absolutely nothing. A really sophisticated engine with variable valve timing might compensate for it but not your normal engine.
