- stan909ExplorerI think you just gave a great course on air brakes. Air brakes as I understand it fail in the on setting which will stop the vehicle until fixed.

Hi stan909 - suggest you do some study on how air brake and suspension systems operate and/or take a course. Air brakes are reliable, safe systems but operate differently from hydraulic brakes found on light vehicles. Engine mounted compressors turn all the time and are designed to do so. Air supply to the tanks is controlled by the system governor.
One of the safety features of air brake systems is the system can tolerate small leaks without the instant failure that occurs when a hydraulic system springs a leak, using the unlimited medium available for transferring the pressure (the earth's atmosphere) as long as the compressor can keep up.
They are much more resistant to fade because there is no fluid to overheat, plus there can be an application gauge on the dash a driver can use to judge and control the amount of brake pressure on long downgrades etc. Air brakes can be applied indefinitely at certain low pressures (up to 20psi or so) without the system fading out.
They also have excellent parking brakes.
Leaks should be repaired.
Don't be afraid of air brakes - but learn how to operate and maintain them... - stan909ExplorerWhy locking torque converter?

- C-Leigh_RacingExplorerMy God, if that pin does come out on a 5.9 pickup, probably easier to leave it running in a bad part of town to get stolen.
That is a lot of work, when it was a Cummins problem to begin with that they'll do nothing about.
Neil - stan909ExplorerThanks
- larmcintshExplorerHave 1994 30' Monaco Dynasty, 3060 six speed allision, 230 hp Cummins. I bought it new, have 130,000 on it. Not familiar with dowel on engine, hope I have will not any problems with it. It runs like a clock. I am sold on the 5.9 mechanical Cummins engine. Take care. Larry
- wny_pat1ExplorerThe lockup depends on which transmission is installed. Mine has it in 3rd and 4th on the Allison MT 643.

You can forget that. Cummins will not talk about it, unless it involves several thousand dollars on your part. But here you go: http://dieseldatabase.com/dodge-cummins-12v-dowel-repair/?id=111
Will call cummins on dowel pin. Thanks to you both. - bob_b1ExplorerI have the same engine with Allison AT542 transmission. The transmission does not have a locking torque converter, but it has been a good performer. My Cummins has been very reliable.
