My 1990 Bounder had a 1989 454, it had similar problem, the culprate was a relay that provided priming to the carb and shut off while cranking and started again when oil pressure climbed. If you as you stated have a carb, you may have the same relay.
I installed(tempoarily)a fuel pressure guage and found that the pump ran fine until the engine warmed up, then it shut down.
The mechanical fuel piump could supply gas at low speeds but on acceleration the engine would starve out.
