Ha! I have a pretty good assistant as well - going on 33 years!
Someone else suggested - on another web page - to just remove the large cap on the ABS valve and take out the spring - put the cap back on and then pump the brakes - take the cap back off and see if the 'piston' has moved out, towards the cap. If so, the dump valve portion is not working right and you should then just replace the valve. Evidently, that piston is only supposed to move out when the antilock 'system' is engaged, and if it does so when just braking, then you have a leak and brake fluid is leaking inside that valve causing the soft pedal. Make sense??
And I don't have, nor have I had the yellow ABS light on...could there still be codes to read? If so, how do I pull them?
