96 F53 chassis turn signal 4 way & brake lights not working

I just purchased a 1996 Holiday Rambler on a Ford F53 chassis.

The turn signals, 4 way flashers and the brake lights don't work. The center brake light does work however. I replaced the blinker relay and it still did not work. We checked for power at the relay and do not have power. I did check the fuses. They are all good including the fuse in location 9 that is indicated to feed the brake lights.

Does anyone know why I wouldn't have 12v at the flasher relay pin 49?

Thanks!

  • Another option is to go to IRV2 Ford Forum Thread and post your dilemma. SubFord is as sharp as a tack on Ford chassis wiring. He is capable of posting wiring prints and talking you through trouble shooting. I'm away from home for the winter and don't have my Ford chassis CD with me. duh!

  • Another thing to check is if there is a large connector at the base of the steering column for the multi-function wiring.
  • Double check owners manual for fuses. Most rigs have different fuses for turn signals and flashers.
Looked at wiring diagram. shows two fuses fuse 7 hot in run and fuse 9 which is also brake lights. Do the brake lights work?
Everything goes through the multi-function switch. If brake lights work then sounds like the switch.
Switch for four ways is where power separates the two fuse inputs.
  • I was thinking it may / could be the multifunction switch. The thing that threw me off was that the pin 49 on the flasher relay didn't have power. Does the multi function feed power to the flasher relay?

If I manually put 12vdc to the pin 49 everything works as it should.
  • RLS7201 is correct that the four ways work whether the ignition switch is on or off.

There could be two fuses. One control and one power.
The turn signals and the four ways should be on two different circuits as the four ways work with ignition off and the turn signals work with ignition on.

That's not completely true. The 4 ways work with the ignition on or off on the OPs chassis.
If all else fails, the multi function switch on older F53 has been known to fail. It's an easy change and is available on Rock Auto
