I'm considering some trips out west and in some wilderness areas here in the east/north. I've never seen the need to have a gun to protect myself from humans and I've been to some pretty rough places ...

IMO: You want to go hiking in remote areas, where wild animals have every right to be-and you are concerned about having an 'encounter'. Maybe you should stick to safer environments, rather than trying to figure out if you should, 'drop' the offending animal.
Oh please. I think if you would bother to actually read the posts, you'd surmise that my intention is not to go marauding thru the countryside murdering animals I happen across. I have every right to be there too, and would just as soon not be eaten by anything while doing it.
