IMO: You want to go hiking in remote areas, where wild animals have every right to be-and you are concerned about having an 'encounter'. Maybe you should stick to safer environments, rather than trying to figure out if you should, 'drop' the offending animal.
Oh please. I think if you would bother to actually read the posts, you'd surmise that my intention is not to go marauding thru the countryside murdering animals I happen across. I have every right to be there too, and would just as soon not be eaten by anything while doing it.
The OP has every right to be concerned about wildlife. I give him credit for wanting to learn how to live with them.
As I have said before education is the key. However, don't feel the need for it only applies to hiking. I have seen damage done to RV's by bears. The last one was 18K worth. You need to learn about your campsite being safe as well as yourself while hiking.
Remember....If you see a bear you are too close.
