Or do you just go and wing it?
Well, no. Let's take snakes for example. I have spent a lot of time outdoors in all kinds of environments. I don't particularly like snakes but am not afraid of them. I know one snake from another but I never kill a snake no matter what kind it is because they have an important roll in keeping the critters in check. I have jumped over copperheads in the trail when I used to run at a local state park and never gave it a second thought. But I do watch where I am going.
To stay somewhat on topic, I am not a gun person so would never have a gun for protection. In my view, the odds of a gun being a help if needed are way lower than the odds that it would be a detriment to myself or someone I love. To each his own.
And as you can see from my signature, we have traveled extensively in our class B in all kinds of environments with nary even a hint of threat. I think the most dangerous thing that we do is get on the highway.
I'm not panicked about snakes either. I know to make noise is the best way to avoid encountering them on the trail. As well as stepping on logs and not over them, etc.
What I don't want to do is be surprised in camp by a snake napping under the RV. I've asked in other forums if there is something you can put out to make it unattractive for them to hang around, and got no real answer. I think I have enough sense to avoid a snake. My dog, on the other hand, is not so smart. So on some trips I take him, I'd rather not have him get bit.
