JMHO, whatever heat you pack (if any), get familiar with it and know its limitations.
Have you ever killed a wild hog? A well placed .22 mag will drop them dead in their tracks. I will not tell anyone to carry a gun, but I do agree with your statement about gaining familiarity, further skill. I am not going anywhere unarmed, and ask that you all respect my right.
