A stupid question about towing

I have a new to me old Cruise America 2005 E450 Majestic 28' V10 and it has a class III trailer hitch. I was going to tow our Cadillac SLS on a trailer behind it when a friend told me to check the frame first because the frames are usually insufficient and added on to. Well I looked under it and sure enough the frame ends 24" behind the tires and has an angle iron addition to it with the hitch bolted on that. What can I tow with that without ruining the RV?

    There should be at least two labels in the driver's door jamb:

    1. From FORD, describing the Chassis as it left the Ford plant

    2. From Coach Builder (Four Winds?), describing the RV as it left their plant.

    The Wheelbases on those two labels should be different. See if there's another label

    3. From a concern that specializes in stretching chassis to the wheelbase and rear overhang needed to carry an RV body. You may be able to contact that concern and learn the rating they modified it for.

    That said, get up around 3000-lb and you'll start feeling the toad. At 4000, you'll know it's holding you back. Not uncommon to have a 5000 towing rating (properly stretched E450 with correct hitch) but more weight than you'd want to tow routinely. Also, RV's often have the "hitch weight" down-rated from what the hitch was built to handle. The long rear overhang leads to that. So you may be able to pull 5000 which usually means 500 hitch weight but the RV only allows 350. That isn't enough for a 5000 trailer.

    I don't like them personally, but REMCO makes "lube pumps" that enable flat towing with some (not all) of the automatic transmissions not otherwise towable.

    In your case, a dolly, one equipped with brakes, would be my choice.
  • I was curious what others did to their frames to be able to tow with their class c rigs. I'm not prepared to sell the Cadi that we love so very much and I'm also not prepared to buy another vehicle that (no offense to those who own them) I would never drive. I would however be willing to have the frame beefed up and maybe use a dolly. What kind of frame mods have others done here and do you have any pics of them?
  • I looked up the weight of the SLS and it is about 3,900, plus the weight of the trailer probably would put you close to 5,000. I would feel that would be more then you want to tow safely.
  • I towed a 2006 Chev Cobalt with a Ford V-10 450, Winnebago Aspect, then traded the 2006 for a 2013 Fiat 500. Cobalt came in around 2600 lbs and haven't weighted Fiat yet, but think around 2200 lbs. No problem with either one behind Aspect.

    You will have no problem towing one of these at around 1800 lbs.

  • Forget the trailer with the SLS. The combination would just be too heavy. Consider a lightweight car that can be towed four down. Even then you'll have to have the frame reinforced. Those Class C coaches on 28' chassis were not designed for heavy duty towing.
  • I have a 2005 CA 28R. See my signature. I traded in my pickup for an 1,800 lb smart car - partly to stay well under the hitch rating for the motorhome.
  • abt 3500 lbs unless you beef up the frame,which can be done by a good welder
