Oil change...soot stays suspended in warm oil. When draining soot flows pretty good out with oil. Drain cold...soot has tenacity to cling to internal parts. My understanding. Diesel are good soot makers just to have injector off just a little and will show up in your oil analysis. A lot of oil filters Don't catch soot. Soot is small some 3 or 4 micron so draining (changing oil) best way to keeep under control. Get a by pass spinner top oil filter (separator actually) if you have big enough engine, oil psi wise.
So I think you are right you would change out more oil when cold. Problem is what you left behind.
