I change the oil with the engine cold. After I have let it drain for several minutes, I usually add a quart or two of oil at the oil fill cap and let it flush out the rest of the old oil from the bottom of the pan. If the oil comes out clean, I am done. This costs me a few bucks extra but I feel that this does the best to get out all of the debris that may settle in the pan.
