AC Cover Repair or Replace

The AC covers on the roof of my '84 Allegro are both cracked and letting in water. One was that way when I got it, the other crack was self-inflicted. They are super brittle from age and sun.

A quick (but admittedly not exhaustive) Google search didn't come up with anything in the way of replacement covers for units that old.

What's my best bet? Fiberglass? Any other "tricks"?

Once they go, they go. They get to be like an egg shell. I had one years back

    blew off!

Once the 2 feet of snow finishes melting off the top I'll have to check it out. My pre-snow recollection was that both were incredibly fragile. I broke the rear one using a soft broom to brush snow off of it.

New covers might be the way to go.

I did the same with contact adhesive and a plastic patch. Also fixed the return flanges that cracked from snow and ice buildup the same way. My are 18 years old.

  • Thanks. Looks PPL has them. The link provided above appears to have them as well. Not sure how I missed that in my search. I wasn't coming up with the old style Duo-Therm shrouds but apparently they're out there!
  • Did you try PPL Motors Parts for the covers. They stock a lot of them and there may be a retrofit.
  • Yes, there are other leaks up there that I need to address. Basically the whole thing needs resealed which I plan to do in the Spring. I figured I'd repair the covers while I was up there. Was wondering whether the cover was to blame for the water dripping in.

    All good ideas - thanks!
  • If you don't find any you could check your local spray on bed liner and see if they will mould your cover.
  • I would bet that the shroud is not the reason if you have water leaking inside. It is probably time to replace the foam gasket under the AC unit. That is not expensive. I would do that when you fix the cover.
