ac replacement

I have a 2000 American Eagle I need to replace the front ac. I currently have a Coleman model 8333-8764 13,500 btu unit I was wondering if I can upgrade to a 15,000 btu unit. Also am curious about what others think are the better models for noise level? One other thing is the power saver models are they a good investment.

thanks,

  • I just replaced my front Dometic AC 13500 btu with the same but upgraded newer unit. The one that was replaced was the original one from 2001. I have a ducted two air system. I had a Mobile guy come out and install it as I just had surgery and couldn't lift. Total price was $1100 installed. It took three of them 30 minutes to do it. The old one had an annoying rumbling sound but the new one is some quieter but still loud with the tv on.
  • The only difference in the 13.5 and the 15, in terms of draw, is that the compressor surge is a little more on the bigger compressor. Surge is when the compressor cuts in. Till it stabilizes it pulls about twice the current. The existing circuit is almost certainly sufficient to handle it. The actual draw from the fan will be about the same. I'd probably stay with a 13.5 to avoid unintended consequences, those things you can't anticipate till they happen.

    quiet, remote control, cheap
  • Bob....The only issue with replacing an older A/C units, is that the new one may not work with your old thermostat. You may need to replace the unit and the thermostat. PPL Motors has quite a large parts department and can usually tell you what units will work with the older ones and if you need to change the thermostat.

Maybe 'dougranier" will pop in on this post and can give you more info about mixing units.
  • I just put on an atwood 15,000 with a heat pump. It replaced a 13,500 . The atwood is quieter and blows more air. Really like it on acnd. It cools the front of the coach like it has never been cool before. That said I hate the way it works on heat pump. I'm on my second one, replaced the first under warranty because I didn't like how it worked, and the second works just like the first. The air temp will get hot, but as soon as it does it shuts off. It takes forever to raise the inside temp. It will only work if outside temp is an over about 45°f. About might be 48 sometimes. I'm still hopeing to get it better, but I think the controls just work that way. Atwood thinks so too and for heating it is a waste. For acnd it's great.
  • We had to replace two roof top A/C's damaged from a hail storm. We upgraded to 15000 btu's and they didn't have to change anything. They perform far better in hot weather than the original 13500's. wish we had done it sooner.
  • Upgrading to a 15,000 btu is a 10 percent increase so if you need more capacity, go for it. If you notice, none of the manufacturers advertise a decibel rating. donn0128 is correct, they are all noisy.
  • By all means upgrade. The couple amps difference is npt worrying about. Quiet? Sorry its the nature of the beast, there all noisy.
