The Winegard dome that you have will make a grinding noise every time you power it on as it does a calibration routine. You are really just hearing a clutch slipping on the motors and the antenna hits it's limits.
The Winegard dome consists of the Dome itself and the on/off switch only. There are no other components. You then connect your DirecTV satellite receiver to the coax cable coming from the dome. The receiver must be connected and you must run through the Repeat Satellite Setup routine for it to work in the RV. You need to look at the back or bottom of the receiver to see what model number receiver you have. When you go into the setup routine, try using the 18" round and multi-switch setting.
