Air bags?

Hey guys. My 96 Bounder 34j with 11k miles seems to drag her hitch on more driveways than other rigs I’ve driven.. I was considering air bags. What do you guys think? It’s the F53 chassis by the way. Thanks!

  • I have Firestone Ride Rite helper air bags on the back of my 95 Bounder 32H F53. I would do it again in a heartbeat. The air bags absorb some of the initial shock of the bumps. After knee surgery, I spent a lot of time on the bed, while the Wife drove. Even fell asleep a few time. It was that smooth and quiet.
As for the front, I have my front axle close to maxed out.(5850#) It rides well with out excess sag.

  • Would you guys recomend putting them in the front too?
  • Thanks guys. It doesn’t look like it’s lower than normal. Most all 34js that I see seem to be pretty low for my liking but it’s even so it’s not lower in the front or rear.. plus it’s just got a huge overhang.. I just figured stiffening up the rear a little bit so it won’t give as much in driveways may help.. if I got a half inch I would probably be fine. I am thinking about buying the Ride Rites myself!

This is very good advice. You should be able to find a frame and chassis shop not too far away in most areas. (I know of one or two around here at the opposite corner of the country, but that's not too helpful for you.)

If your rear suspension is riding lower than it ought to, air helper springs will help some, as would installing an additional leaf or helper spring. If it's riding low because something is broken, obviously that something should be fixed.

If it's just a somewhat poor design with a lousy departure angle, you can maybe gain a little bit with suspension upgrades/fixes but to some extent you're stuck with what the builder put together.

I have ride-rite air helper springs on my class C and for me they work quite nicely.

A Ford should sit pretty well compared to a Chevy and we did put a hitch roller on our old one.
Does the rig sit right or sag off level to the rear? I would give strong consideration to adding a leaf to the springs, as an alternative. Get some recommendations from a truck shop for beginners.
  • I put them on my 99 for the same issue. I also install the rollers on the hitch to also help.
