You've posted a ton of answers to folks issues on here. I've read many of them. I suspect that, if you've done what you say you've done in terms of research, correct part numbers, trying to locate new and or used ones, and you've more than likely looked into substitutions, it sure sounds like you've covered all the bases/options possible.
I recently posted on another RV site about replacing my P.O.S. Aero 5050XL Stainless Muffler that I had installed about 2.5 years ago because it's useless and makes a ton of noise. So, I called Freightliner for the replacement in the bone stock muffler. Well, like you, I was astounded, a whopping $1,500 for the stock muffler.
Are you kidding me? Entire exhaust systems can be built for that. So, I feel your pain. Good luck in whatever route you take to remedy this situation of yours. I know if it were me, I'd do everything humanly possible to keep from paying $3,000 ea. for those. I'd check every truck junkyard from here to Mars. Good luck.
