If the Springs break (rust/worn out) then attempting to use it by modifying it will be a waste of time. Since it has failed and is weak, the odds are you will have that one fail again also. If 1 spring has broken from age/rust, due to the age of the unit, you need to replace all 8 springs. The others will fail in the next year. Doug
