I may try to re-use the broken spring. The eye loop just broke off, so I may try to bend it around and make a new loop. The washer idea sounds genius!

Another good idea that I've heard of when replacing those springs is to use spring clothes pins. You just take the springs out and use the wooden parts as wedges in between the spring coils.
