Yes, you got it! Unless you are in New Jersey, where the Garden State Parkway is fine for everyone... because NJ makes up its' own rules. And doesn't tell anyone what they are. (I have family in NJ, we trade jokes all the time about NJ and CT!)
dotcommer, yes, some of the signs are obscured or just not there. But in New England - usually - "parkways" are just for passenger cars and pickup trucks (but you could conceivably get in trouble for 3/4 ton and up trucks if a state trooper is in a bad mood).
You are dealing with some roads laid out, literally, following cow paths from colonial times. Take a look at a road map of Boston! As my Dad once said, when feeling curmudgeonly Old Yankee, "if you don't know where to go around here, maybe you shouldn't be here..." lol!
These forums are great for route ideas, and warnings about things to look out for (like road restrictions and construction).
