Almost disaster

I had a shop in Foley Al. change the oil and filters. It was expected that they'd use their filters, double the price of Fleetguard filters. An additional $70 to install their double-priced air filter was surprising, but that's a real pain to do.

The real kicker, though, was that the oil sump drain plug was only finger-tight, or finger-loose, and had backed out about halfway to falling out. That I always take a peek to see what's leaking today saved us.

Always, always go behind service people and check things.

  • So sad on the quality of today's workmanship. Glad you were able to catch the bad error.

I had a new Chev 2500 pickup and took it to a local dealer (where I purchased the truck) to have an oil change. I waited for it. About an hour after I got home I noticed oil on the concrete driveway. Took it back and it turned out the mechanic had filled it twice with oil. I was not happy. Fortunately nothing bad happened from it.

    Pays to check behind them.
  • That was one reason I used Speedco, if due and not close to home. They would check levels in transmissions and rear ends. Then they insisted driver watch while they torqued drain plug and level plugs.
