Another RMP/Zep Question

For those of you who have used the RMP or Zep floor finish to restore the shine and protection of your coach:

I am considering the process, but in reading the preparation steps, I ask if anyone has used Mr. Clean Magic Erasers instead of Barkeeper's Friend and if so, what results did you have?

With this unseasonably warm weather here in the Old North State, I spent the better part of the day yesterday cleaning the RV before storing for the winter. I was having a difficult time getting the leaf stains and other oxidation with a regular RV washing brush/wand and remembered someone on here suggesting the Magic Eraser. I gotta say...that was one of the best recommendations I've had so far! Even with light pressure, it took the leaf stains and the black streaks and other road scum off better than anything I've ever tried before. So, again, I was wondering how effective it would be vs. the BKF in prep for the RMP treatment.

  • The preparation is the key to success and longevity in the process. I spent a lot of time with final wash and rinse using Dawn detergent. Then I spent a lof of time with just wiping it down with fresh water until all traces of detergent was gone. The application lasted over 3 years on one side, (sunny side mostly) and I simply used the removal solvent to remove it (about a two hour job on one side of the MH) and re-applied. The other side showed no flaking or deterioration so I just freshened it up with a single application of RMP. BTW: we fulltime so its always in the elements.

X2. BKF does a good job. And, it's a lot cheaper than Magic Erasers.

Make sure the surface is dull after the barkeepers is used. I think the mistake that many on here make is they apply the Zeps to a shiny surface and it flakes off. The surface needs to be oxidized as in an older weather beaten surface to adhere well. Yours may be a good candidate as your profile says you have a 1999 MH. Mine would still take a shine with a cleaner wax up until it was about 15 years old.
  • Use what you like. Whatever product you use just needs to get the unit as clean as you want it to be. Once you start applying the acrylic finish then whatever it goes over stays there. Whether it Barkeepers, Dutch Cleanser, Magic wipes of some flavor use what is easiest for you. I like Barkeepers.

  • I used Mr. clean erasers and they did a great job especially where the fiberglass was crackled with dirt. But it did take quite a few of them.
  • In my experiences with the Mr. Clean erasers they shrivel and break up fairly quickly. Love them for small projects, but seems like you would need a huge number of them to do the whole unit. Regular sponge and bkf would probably be more cost efficient.
