Anti Freeze

I have a 2006 Sport Coach Encore, the low coolant light came on. I found the problem, a weak radiator cap. I'm trying to refill the coolant tank and I can't tell or find out what type anti freeze is required. I can't tell if it's extend life anti freeze or the regular.

Thanks for any help, bye Dennis
  • I had Freightliner go thru and service the coach last Oct 2012 before I put it in storage. They said there was no issue with cooling system. I hope I can trust them, I have going to them for years for servicing on all the motorhomes. I'm going to top it off and have it checked.

Thanks for the advice and pointing me in the correct direction. I may have get directions and do it mys

  • If you are doing a complete coolant change, which you should because of age if original or because it is NOT a good idea to mix different coolant chemistries, you really should buy the concentrate, not 50/50. The reason is that you can never (reasonably anyway) get the several gallons of residual water (hopefully distilled water for final rinse) out of those long hoses from engine to dash heater and the heater core itself.

If you want "blow by blow" instructions on doing it properly, let us know. It is NOT difficult to do properly but is time consuming.
  • Thank you for all the info.....I went to O Reilly's and bought Fleet 50/50 for Cat engines. I drained some out of the radiator and it looks pink?????

Thanks again, happy camping. Bye Dennis

What color is the anti freeze Dennis!

Color of the antifreeze has no bearing on what the chemical make up of it is and should not be used to determine whether it is propylene glycol, ethylene glycol, or a OAT extended life coolant
  • I bought CAT extended life. Will last 600,000 miles with an additive at 300K. It's Red.It is also better for Diesels as it has stuff for dissimilar metal corrosion in it which is what causes failure in collant systems. It is $17/gal at Cat dealers and can be used in any system. We ran a Peterbilt with a Cat engine in it and now have a Chevy Duramax.
  • I just flushed and replaced my antifreeze with "Peak" brand.
It said on the container that it is compatible with All
antifreeze brands. The stuff I used was not diluted.

  • Call your chassis maker with your chassis serial number. That will at least tell you what the coach came with.

Of course, even if long life, it is well past time for a change anyway.
