People who prefer the old 5-cyl T1N engine generally do so because of its simpler (and, of course, less effective) emissions control system and its associated electronics. In this regard, it is no different from other modern diesels. Current production diesel engines require the occasional adding of DEF fluid, which reduces emissions. They are incredibly clean and well-behaved engines. I personally am more than happy to pay the small price to support a clean environment for our grandkids. Not everybody agrees. I used to own a T1N, and now own the new 4-cylinder engine (which IMO is even better than the 6). The current engines are far more refined. I would not hesitate to buy another one.
