One of the reasons for doing this is because many people don't always have a lot of money in their bank account. If the set limit was at $500, then everybody who wanted to use that pump would have to have $500 in their bank account if they want to use a debit card. The card will be approved by the computer based on the max amount they anticipate you'll buy. So if the limit is set at $75 and you only have $50 in your bank account, when you swipe your debit card the computer is looking to see if a $75 charge will clear. If it won't clear then you don't get gas even if you only wanted $20 worth.
