I agree with others, at many stations the stated limits are common albeit frustrating. As stated if you fuel at the truck island they may have a different practice.
We had a "$500 temporary hold" story also. We found this out at a Flying J (forgot where). While he was fueling our credit union called me to confirm it was us using the card and informed us of the $500 hold charge, which the bank said is entirely common practice.
