Actually diesels run cooler in the engine compartment. That is why all ambulances are now diesel. There were a LOT of gas engine ambulances that had engine compartment fires in the late 90's and all the builders switched to diesels.
Did you ever wonder why a diesel engine of the same size as a gasoline engine has such a large oil capacity? That is because the oil is used to carry away some of the heat that is generated by the engine.
Increasing the oil capacity on a gasoline engine would accomplish the same thing and with a properly designed radiator, should have no problems with overheating. It's not rocket science to design a rear gasoline engine coach. It is just the lack of demand.
