Anyone replace a Winni fiberglass roof with another material

Has anyone changed a factory fiberglass roof from an older Winnebego -itasca class A motor home with a different type....

Short version - roof on 1993 27 ft itasca damaged and can't be fixed.. Appears to get fiberglass or entire roof from Winnie is either not possible or estimated to be $8000 plus..

What damage is
Roof damage is that fiberglass peeled and broke so no repair is possible (need to remove entire sheet) and most of the thin wood (paper thin) layer separated ... But all other elements of roof appear strong to 2 different shops and 5 separate RV guys who walked on it and inspected..

Issue seems to be that the arc of the fiberglass would leave some type of space if rubber roof applied.....

What I am looking for is anyone who has actual tired or succeeded in replacing this type roof with another material and having it be safe, reliable and long lasting from water leaks etc....
.......
Or any other options to get it in working order..
  • JackUtah,
Well Sir, there is a possible simple solution to your dilemma. I don't know if you've heard anything about them or not but, there are quite a few folks in the RV world now that are have a "Rhino liner" type roof coating applied. When I was having some body work done on our coach, the company that does that fantastic body work, also installs or, applies that outstanding roof coating.

The prep everything needed, wood, seals, remove things, etc. and spray on that coating, approx. 3/16" to 1/4" thick. It's quieter and reflects way more of the suns heat than the factory roof did. And, it's all one piece. When I was there checking up on the progress of our body work, I was allowed to climb up the ladders of some really expensive coaches to check out the results of the application. It was just like looking at the back of a pickup bed. You couldn't damage that roof if you wanted to.

And the cost, at least to me, was outstandingly reasonable. There were rubber roofed coaches having it done, as well as fiberglass roofed coaches too. San Diego RV Center was/is the place that does it in that area. If you get interested, you'll have to look up who might do it in your area or, if it were me, knowing what I know and have seen, I'd drive a considerable distance to get it done.

  • I knew a repair guy in Pensacola, FL who told me he could put a new rolled aluminum roof on for cheaper than he could rubber.

Aluminum will not make the radius curve without looking horrible if you could even get it to roll over the top to the side. Doug
  • Yes, I have. You peel off the old fiberglass and then deck the roof with Luan. You then install prefabricated aluminum radius edges from the top to the side and then glue EPDM rubber like any RV. Have not done one in about 4 years. Doug
  • There is a company in Sacramento that replaces RV roofs, and they come to you to do it. Don't know if they will replace a fiberglass roof, wouldn't hurt to call them and ask. Phone is 916-284-7067. They specialize in doing rubber roofs.
