Anyone replace an AC unit themselves?

A rope around the unit, top of the unit facing the side, 2 people on the ground and 1 on the roof. Cooling fins toward the ground. The 2 on the ground lift/ push it up the side, person on the roof pulling the rope, when high enough then person on the roof grabs the unit in the output hole and lifts it up on the roof and the centers it over the opening, everything else is done inside the motorhome.2ladders may be used on the ground if the ground people need to get the unit higher, I've done hundreds this way.

I used the bucket on my tractor to lift the new one up on my brothers motorhome.
I seen on youtube where a guy took two 16' 2x6s and leaned them against his roof for a ramp, tied a rope around the box the ac came in and 2 on roof pulling with 2 on the ground pushing.

My dad built a frame around his Airstream when he installed a rooftop A/C. Basically wood scaffolding, that and a come-a-long worked for him.

I used an extension ladder..one person on the roof pulling up with a rope, I was behind pushing and making sure it was centered on ladder. A little awkward but worked fine...threw the old one off the roof.

Use scaffolding and 2 people to lift it from level to level to the roof.

X2 on the extension ladder. Did one on one of my older motorhomes a few years back. Need room get the ladder on the flattest incline you can. Pushed mine up by myself. Used the box to transport the old one back down the ladder. Got a few bucks for it on Craiglist (parts).

Capacitors aren't all created equal. I don't know the grading system but an appliance repair shop should. Basically some are good for more hours than others.

Have you cleaned the coils? Not just the rear one (condenser) that you can see, but also the one in front, under sheet metal (evaporator) that you can't see till you remove some of that metal...

That said, check amps current draw with a clamp-on AC Ammeter. There should be an RLA (Running Load Amps) on the compressor tag or the unit Model/Serial/Amps/Volts etc plate. If it's pulling rated amps, you could well be good to go for awhile.

Oh, I watched a professional mobile RV change one. He and an assistant slid new up an extension ladder in its packing and the old back down the same way....

if you use any thing like a ladder or two 2 x 4's be sure to wrap a towel around the part that leans up against the side or the roof of the MH or TT. it will put a hole in the MH or TT and cause a leak when it rains. it may be smart to put a piece of card board or plywood on the roof so you don't poke a hole inn the roof too
