Are LP generators a pain

I've been looking for months on downsizing from my 30ft class C to something 24ft or less. I do like some of the B's but it seems the majority have LP generators. Is that as big of a pain as it sounds? Always having to worry about your LP tank levels, finding a place to fill the tanks, and the rumor is they are fairly loud?

I like the simplicity of a generator pulling from the coach's gas tank but it's just because I've never had a LP genset

  • they run cleaner ,theres no problem geting propane, and the there no more noise than a gas, ours is 7yrs old runs great . and they do use a tad more fuel than a gas gen.
  • I have an LP generator in my 5er. It isn't any louder than the same model that runs on gas. An advantage is you don't have to worry about the fuel going stale and gumming up your carb. The downside is that they do use more fuel than a gasoline model.
  • I have one in my truck camper and it is a little loud, but that's to be expected in such a small area..I can run my AC with the gen for about 10 hours on a 20# bottle.. Everybody anymore sells LP so that's not a problem..I've had several gas and have never had a problem with them either, but the LP seems to start faster and runs real smooth.
  • I can't say ours (which came built into the B) has been a pain at all. We use the propane generator as needed if we're dry camping somewhere to recharge the electronics and battery, for the microwave or to run the AC.

But most of the time we use the contents of the propane tank to run the three-way refrigerator when parked all day somewhere, which is extremely handy. And also if dry camping, the propane powers the hot water tank and furnace.

We go a long time between fill ups because we have hookups usually, but find propane quite easily. It's never been an issue in three years and a lot of long trips. There was even a fill up available inside Yellowstone NP just outside Fishing Bridge CG.

Doesn't seem any louder than others around the CGs to me, but never tested the relative decibels.
  • not a pain. I really liked ours at the time. They will use a lot of propane.
